Parumala Church, also known as St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s Malankara Orthodox Church or Parumala Pally, is a famous church located in Parumala, Thiruvalla Taluk, in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala. This sacred place holds significant religious and historical importance, serving as a pilgrimage center and the mausoleum of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church.
Parumala Church stands as a testament to Kerala’s rich Christian heritage. Its serene location on the banks of the Pampa River adds to its spiritual allure. The church is dedicated to St. Gregorios of Parumala, affectionately known as “Parumala Thirumeni”. His legacy shines brightly as a beacon of hope for millions, offering solace in times of suffering and struggle.
St. Gregorios of Parumala was ordained as a reader-deacon (Korooyo) at the tender age of ten by Palakkunnath Mathews Mar Athanasios at Karingachira Church. His life was marked by unwavering devotion, compassion, and a deep connection with God. His teachings continue to inspire generations, emphasizing the power of prayer and faith.
Under the visionary leadership of Parumala Thirumeni, the old church and an adjoining seminary building were constructed on January 27, 1895. The expansion of the church continued until 1960. Later, His Holiness Baselius Marthoma Mathews II, the Catholicos of the East, laid the foundation stone for the new church on March 19, 1995.
Parumala Perunnal, the glorious festival of St. Peter’s & St. Paul’s Orthodox Church, takes place annually from October 26th to November 2nd. Devotees from all corners of Kerala gather to commemorate the death anniversary of St. Gregorios. During this time, special prayers are offered, rituals performed, and the church grounds come alive with fervor and devotion.
The old church was eventually demolished, and a new chapel was constructed on the premises of St. Gregorios Hospital, Parumala, in October 1997. The legacy of Parumala Thirumeni lives on, reminding us to remember God in everything we do.
Whether you seek spiritual solace, historical insights, or simply wish to immerse yourself in the beauty of Kerala, a visit to Parumala Church promises a profound experience. Let the tranquil surroundings and the spirit of St. Gregorios inspire your journey.
