Kerala’s Syrian Christians believe that they are one of the oldest surviving Christian community in the world ,converted in 52 AD by St Thomas .The origins of this community in Kerala remained a mystery for all Christians travelers to our land since time immemorial . The community still use Syriac language close to “Aramaic” the language spoken by Jesus in their liturgy .
Many believe that the community remained as a separate ” race ” since it didn’t indulge much into conversions by keeping the traditions intact to some extend in its early days .On one side Kerala Historians question such claims of St Thomas ‘s visit to Kerala in 52 AD citing lack of documented history to substantiate such claims .
On the other side Church elders claim that all the documented history of Kerala’s Syrian Christians were destroyed by Portuguese under their rule .Well a belief system need not follow any rationale and the origins will remain an oral history on its origins ,for this small community until documented history proves otherwise.
